bing surfboards

bing surfboards was established in 1959 by herbert "bing" copeland. naturally, bing had been building boards prior to opening formally as bing surfboards.

bing learned to shape from legendary craftsman and surfboard builder dale velzy. bing surfboards was initially located on hermosa beach but later move to a larger and more exposed shop on the pacific coast highway.

bing surfboards is widely recognized as one of the top 10 surfboard manufacturers of the 60s and beyond. besides being one of the largest producers of surfboards, bing surfboards built some of the best riding, most popular models of the mid 60s.

both the bing 'donald takayama' and 'nuuhiwa noserider' are still considered prized riders some 40 years later. the bing pipeliner, designed and shaped by dick brewer, was a major influence on the evolution of big wave guns.

some of the top riders of the day surfed under the bing surfboards label, including 1970 world champion, rolf auress, david nuuhiwa, and donald takayama.

when the shortboard revolution began in the late 60s, many of the larger surfboard labels fizzled, but bing surfboards continued to be a force, and in fact produced some of the more popular short boards of the late 60s and 70s.

bing surfboards may have been the first to use three fins in surfboard design, way before their popular time: it would take nearly a decade before these fins were widely used on boards, to be known as thrusters.

thank you, bing, for bringing us bing surfboards and the important innovations and just great working surfboards!

here are a few of the bing surfboard models from the 1960s.
